M6 J16-19 smart motorway update: J18-19 overnight full closures and diversion route

Forthcoming overnight full closures on the M6 between J18-19.

This next phase of planned work will take place on

Monday 7th November for 4 nights and Monday 14th November also for 4 nights.

This is currently awaiting full confirmation for Cheshire East but I will update you next week when this is concrete and supply you with a copy of the diversion routes and any other details.

The closures will be in place from 10pm to 6am and will allow our teams to switch our traffic management from the central reserve to the motorway verges. We will be constructing the gantries which will power the new smart motorway in the verges.

The hard shoulder, which is currently being used as a running lane, will be closed off with a temporary barrier to create a safe working area for our teams. What are now lanes 2 and 3 will become lanes 1 and 2 with a 3rd lane will be created by removing the barrier on the central reserve to reveal a newly created running lane. Creating 3 narrow lanes as before with the 50mph restriction in place. This will be between J19-18 only. The work in the central reserve J18-17 will continue and during these closures we will also extend some of our traffic management down a little, past J17.

The closures will be well published in the regional press, highways webpage, via yourselves, motorway services areas on the network, local community and on advance signage on the diversion route. A residents’ letter will also go out to all properties along the diversion route and I will send you all a copy so you can upload it to your individual websites.
